I can’t remember the last time I had a frozen pizza. I’ve never had much luck with them and eventually the only frozen pizza I’d eat would be the cheapest, just to satisfy my pizza habit. I’m addicted to pizza and any pizza I thought was better than no pizza at all. I always thought frozen pizza was something I’d settle for when real pizza wasn’t available.
But recently, I think my entire way of thinking about frozen pizza has changed. I’ll still prefer to go out to a pizzeria and have a large pie, but some of that is due to the ambiance and not just the taste of their pizza. Just the other day I had the opportunity to try the new DIGIORNO pizzeria style pizza. It’s actually called “DIGIORNO pizzeria.”
This was the first DIGIORNO pizza I’d ever cooked. From the moment I opened the box, I was intrigued. This must be one of the freshest frozen pizzas made simply because of the amazing packaging. It comes in an almost vacuum sealed like bag. Opening it is not a chore. There’s no stabbing at various places and ripping it open. There’s no sawing the plastic wrap with a steak knife. There’s a little plastic strip that keeps it sealed, just pull it and the strip comes around the outside of the bag and out pops the pizza from DIGIORNO.
That was the first thing to make me happy about the pizza. Now, I had two opportunities to try the new pizzzeria pizza from DIGIORNO. The first night I tried it, I popped it into the oven at just the right temp. The instructions said to keep it in the oven for 18-20 minutes for a nice perfect airy crust. The special airy crust and the tangy sauce are what makes these new pizzas so unique. Well, I took it out of the oven at the 20 minute mark, it may have been 21 minutes and while the pizza tasted good, the sauce was amazing, just enough tang for me on this Primo Pepperoni pizzeria style pizza. I do admit, the crust wasn’t as good as advertised.
It wasn’t until two days later that I found out why. I had simply overcooked it. But nevertheless, my family of three was satisfied with one DIGIORNO’s pizzeria pizza.
Two days later, we tried this again. There were two differences in this pizza cooking experience. First, I made sure to take the pizza out of the oven at the 18 minute mark and the difference in the crust was astounding. Second, I cut it triangle slices instead of squares. Maybe triangles do taste better than squares. Now, about the cooking time, beware, all ovens are different. My oven is a piece of trash, so your results will most likely differ. The crust on the pizza this evening was perfect. It wasn’t too crisp nor too soft, it was just right. After my first slice, I would have preferred eating it backwards just to inhale the crust sooner, but my table manners got the better of me.
DIGIORNO claims their new pizza is the closest thing you can find to a real pizzeria style pie in the frozen food section, and I think they just may be right. I’ve talked to others who agree this new “pizzeria” from DIGIORNO is well worth the trip to the local grocery store. The combination of the airy crust and the tang in the sauce and the use of all natural ingredients is perfect and makes frozen pizza not taste like typical frozen pizza.
Remember, do not overcook this pizza, if you do, you’ll be taking away one of it’s best attributes, the close enough to perfect pizzeria style crust.
