If you love to travel and love pizza, the editors of Food Network magazine have a list for you. The list appeared in the magazine in their September 2011 issue, but it’s almost guaranteed that the pizzerias listed will continue to produce great slices and pies for the upcoming years. So if you’re just viewing this list now, don’t worry, the pizza in each of the following pizzerias will still be good if you get there next year or the year after. Before you go, just make sure the restaurant is still open before making a special trip. In this terrible economy which has an over 8.0% unemployment rate, a rate that would be much higher if so many millions had not left the job market, has a way of shuttering even the best of restaurants. So, call ahead before you visit.
You’ll find the normal to the exotic on this list. That means you’ll see a sausage pizza in New Jersey to a mashed potato pizza in Maine. You’ll also find everything in between.
“When we set out six months ago to find the greatest pizzas in America, we didn’t insist on thin crust, or red sauce — we didn’t even care if they were round. They just had to be awesome,” said Maile Carpenter, editor in chief, Food Network Magazine. “We found out that pizza is an even more sensitive subject than we thought, and there will be people who are surprised by our choices, but that’s the whole point: There’s no single best way to make it.”
