The Seven Natural Wonders of Austria
7. Lichtenstein Gorge
The Lichtenstein Gorge is 50 km south of Salzburg, Austria. It is named after Prince Johan II of Lichtenstein who in 1875 built the walkways along the gorge. Prince Johan II, at the time of his death, was the longest reigning monarch in Europe. His reign was 70 years and 90 days. The gorge is located on the Grossarl river. High walls (up to 300 km) help hide light in the narrow gorge. There are points where the Lichtenstein Gorge does have more sun, one of those being where the waterfall spray creates a rainbow effect. This area is quite photographic. Take pictures. Share them on our Facebook page. We’d love to see the beauty of the Lichtenstein Gorge from the eyes of our readers.
Visit the official Lichtenstein Gorge website.
6. Eisriesenwelt
Eisriesenwelt is the largest ice cave in the world. It is located south of Salzburg near the town of Werfen. The cave is over 40 kilometers in length. Each year Eisriesnwelt is visited by over 200,000 visitors. If you plan on being one of the 200,000+ yearly visitors to Eisriesnwelt, you’ll have to arrive between May and October 26th and wear a coat. The temperatures inside are an average 32 degrees fahrenheit. Also, no photography is permitted once you go inside. It says a lot about Austrian geography to have a second cave on our seven natural wonders of Austria list.
5. The Krimml Falls
If you begin your trip eating pizza in Salzburg instead of in Vienna, your travel time to see some natural wonders will be drastically decreased. There are so many natural wonders just around Salzburg. Waterfalls are beautiful, but to many, those in Europe are the most beautiful of all. The image above does not do the Krimml Falls justice (send us yours if you’ve visited the Krimml Waterfalls). The Krimml Falls are the highest in Austria at a height of 1247 ft. (380m). The falls are tiered with a three stage flow. The water from Krimml Falls flows into the Salzach which flows to the Inn which goes into the Danube which then flows into the Black Sea.
