Lamprechtsofen, the first of two caves on our seven natural wonders of Austria list, used to be the deepest cave in the world. However, in 2001, a Ukranian and Russian team re-explored Voronya Cave in Georgia and determined that it was now the deepest cave in the world. Nevertheless, that does not take anything away from how impressive stature of Lamprechtsofen, one of the most beautiful caves in the world. The beauty is attested to by the numerous lakes, streams, waterfalls and gorges. This is one of the most beautiful places on earth, not just in Austria. Lamprechtsofen is not just known for its natural beauty but also for its legends. The biggest of these legends is that Knight Lampbrecht, a robber baron, hid his fortune in this cave. It was so well hidden that no one up till today has found that treasure. But 198 skeletons show that there have been plenty of unsuccessful treasure hunters looking for that treasure in the past.

The Karwendel Mountains which is better known as Karwendel are located in the northern limestone Alps. This is an area mostly inside of Tyrol but some of the range is also located inside of Bavaria. The Karwendel is home to many peaks, 125 of these peaks are over the 2000m mark. Some of the more notable peaks in the Karwendel are Birkkarspitze (2749 m), Hintere Bachofenspitze (2668 m), Hohe Warte (2596 m) and Demeljoch (1924 m). The entire Karwendel mountain range is a protected area and is the home of many great trails. If you’re interested in hiking the Karwendel, some good starting points are Seefeld, Mittenwald and Scharnitz. If you are interested in finding a good fixed rope route, those routes would be found in Innsbruck and Mieming.

2. Lake Neusiedl

Lake Neusiedl

We have put Lake Neusiedl on our seven natural wonders list of Austria and it is unique to our list even though the lake crosses the border with Hungary. However, a majority of Lake Neusiedl is found within Austria. The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands protects Lake Neusiedl from damns, drainage for farming and more threats. Lake Neusiedl is home to many rare plant and bird species. The reeds surrounding the lake make the lake home to many migratory birds. There are also fsmall populations of Asinara White donkeys, Mangalitza pigs and Grey Hungarian cattle. Plenty of fun activities are also found on the lake when you’re not soaking up its beauty.

Lakes are always one of our favorite destinations to include in our seven natural wonders lists. We are partial to lakes. If you’ve visited Lake Neusidl, please let us know.
