With many songs, it is so easy to be taken back to a specific enjoyable experiences in life. For me many of these connections involve songs that I connect with the summertime, such as attending music festivals, spending time at the beach, camping or on a nice long road trip with friends. Our hope with this list is that you’ll discover a new band or two and that you’ll be able to one day make a similar connection between one of these songs and this upcoming summer.

10. Rush Midnight – “Dreaming of an Island”
Album: +1 EP (2012)
Russ Manning (Rush Midnight) was the previous bass player for synth pop project Twin Shadow. Coming into his own sound with Rush Midnight, Manning has created a personal style of cool on his debut release of +1.
Closing out the ep is “Dreaming of an Island” a reggae song about Manning dreaming of his girl being in the Philippines and how he wanted be with her, but couldn’t due to his tour requirments. I feel that this is a great song to take the listener to carefree sunny summer days.
Toro y Moi – “So Many Details”
Album: Anything in Return (2013)
Chazwick Bradley Bundick (Toro y Moi) first made a name for himself garnering the chillwave movement in 2010 and 2011 with artists such as Washed Out and Neon Indian. On his recent release of Anything in Return is has expanded his sound past the chillwave genre. This has led him to succeed in creating a pop album full of emotion.
The first single released from Anything in Return was “So Many Details” which is easy to hear to major leap from his aforementioned sound. This track hits the listener with a strong beat to immediately grab attention and is quickly followed by Bundicks smooth voice. This song takes me back to nights spent around a bonfire with friends.
MS MR – “Fantasy”
Album: Secondhand Rapture (2013)
MS MR is a dream pop duo created by vocalist Lizzy Plapinger and producer Max Hershenow. Their first album Secondhand Rapture just dropped on May 14. The song “Fantasy” is one of three songs that they’ve released as a single and has a great summer sound. It is an uplifting song that includes Plapinger’s powerful vocals perfectly paired up with piano and handclaps.
Jeff The Brotherhood – “Six Pack”
Album: Hypnotic Nights (2012)
Two piece post-punk band Jeff The Brotherhood was created by brothers Jake and Jamin Orrall back in 2001 when they were still in high school. In their journey to where they stand today, Warner Brothers record deal, they released several limited-release albums and toured extensively.
On “Six Pack” we are given a driving rock song that would be perfect to listen to while enjoying a few cold ones (and pizza) with friends.

Tame Impala – “Mind Mischief”
Album: Lonerism (2012)
In their words Tame Impala are a steady flowing psychedelic groove rock band that emphasizes dream-like melody. The band is led by Kevin Parker and hails from Perth, Australia. Having begun its existence as a band when Parker replaced the current drummer of Dee Dee Drums and changed the name of the band in 2007.
October 2012, Tame Impala released their second full length album Lonerism. Living up to high expectations the band has been touring heavily with many sold out shows. The track “Mind Mischief” includes a funky guitar riff along with sexy vocals. This song would be perfect to include at any sunny barbeque.
Youth Lagoon – “Mute”
Album: Wondrous Bughouse (2013)
Youth Lagoon is the voice used by Trevor Powers in a dreamy lo-fi fashion. I was blown away by Powers debut release of The Year of Hibernation. My feelings for his follow-up album Wondrous Bughouse has been no different.
Picking the heavy psych sounding track of “Mute” was done in part due to the songs sheer creepiness and bringing back memories of spending time with friends at music festivals.
Chromatics – “Lady”
Album: Kill for Love (2012)
Electronic band Chromatics was formed in 2001 and has cycled through multiple members leaving only guitarist Adam Miller as the single remaining member. In 2012 they released Kill for Love which is most well admired for their cover of Neil Young’s “Into the Black”.
The song that we’ve chosen for this list has a smooth driving beat to start and moves on to include some eerie samples. The song evolves as the slow burning vocals are introduced. This would be the perfect song to include on your iPod playlist when taking a long bike ride.
Unknown Mortal Orchestra – “So Good At Being In Trouble”
Album: II (2013)
Unknown Mortal Orchestra have effectively thought up one of the strangest band names that we can remember. Their roots are held in New Zealand as well as in the U.S. and they create an upbeat rock psych sound that goes together well days of sunshine.
In “So Good At Being In Trouble” we are given an easy listen where the band moves into a more slow bluesy trek away from their complex guitar riffs. Whether hanging out by the pool on the beach looking into the ocean this song is for you.

Blackbird Blackbird – “All”
Album: Boracay Planet (2012)
A big part of the chllwave sound represented in the bay area was Blackbird Blackbird (Mikey Maramag). His sound has has evolved and become even more intricate through the release of his three albums.
If you want the perfect song to wake to and set out on a morning walk with your dog, this is it. This track is beautiful from the first note and can easily send the listener into a dreamlike state.

Atoms for Peace – “Default”
Album: AMOK (2013)
Thom York (Radiohead), Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Nigel Godrich (Radiohead producer) and more have joined forces to create Atoms for Peace. With these amazing musicians it’s no surprise that their debut release of AMOK is perfection. This album has also peaked our excitement in catching them live while we are in Austin for Austin City Limits Music Festival in October.
In similar fashion to Radiohead’s In Rainbows I view this entire album and specifically “Default” as the perfect music to play when you escape the city and have the opportunity to stargaze.
