Featured Pizza List
Created by Brian of the PizzaSpotz.com staff
This list includes both the living and the dead among Cub greats. Those Cubs greats who’ve passed on are the ones we wish we could’ve shared a pizza with (especially #1 on our list). We welcome your own top ten list of Cubs players you’d like to share a pizza with. Don’t forget to include a line or two about each of your selected players. Send us your list here.
10. Frank Chance
This man, the last manager to ever know what it’s like to manage a Cubs team to a winning World Series, may never have eaten pizza. Yeah, that’s how long it’s been since the Cubs have won a World Series…1908. I’d love to pick his brain and bottle his managerial skills and pass those on to all future Cubs managers.
9. Lou Boudreau (announcer)
I loved listening to Lou on my AM radio when I was a kid growing up in the south suburbs of Chicago. I would spend much of the afternoon throwing a rubber ball against the brick wall of our town home while listening to Vince, Jack and Lou on WGN.
8. Carlos Zambrano
Some people claim Carlos has a terrible temper. However, I think that’s just his competitive spirit. This guy is an awesome player and I’d love to share a slice with the Big Z. Maybe he’ll read this and let us know what pizzeria is his favorite in Chicagoland. Carlos, if you’re reading this, click here and tell our pizzaspotz readers where you’d like to share a large pizza with me. Better yet, maybe we can each buy a large and we won’t have to share.
7. Ivan DeJesus
When I was young, I was simply amazed by the way Ivan DeJesus could time his leaps, and at full extension, rob opposing batters of sure singles. Ivan was fast too. He stole many bases and helped me fall in love with the stolen base. A few years later, Ricky Henderson took my breath away with his speed, but it all began with Ivan DeJesus for me.
6. Sammy Sosa
I love Sammy Sosa. That season in which he battled Mark McGwire to be the first to get to 62 was the most amazing ever. That night in St. Louis when Mark hit #62 was so emotional. I loved the way Sammy congratulated him that evening. Despite what the world has come to find out later about Mark and rumors about Sammy, his corked bat, and his weired Michael Jackson like skin condition, Sammy will always have a fond place in my heart, especially his battle with Mark McGwire.
5. Ernie Banks
I had to include Ernie Banks on this list because he is after all, Mr. Cub. I never saw Ernie play. I just remember seeing highlights of Ernie hitting his 500th home run which was often played during rain delays in the late 70s. It’s still sad that he never experienced a championship.
4. Harry Caray (announcer)
Root, root, root for the Cubbies. That’s what was so great about Harry. He loved the Cubs. Harry also knew how to have a good time. It’d be great to share a pizza with Harry for two reasons. First, I think the stories he could tell over pizza would keep me entertained for hours, if not days. Second, I think I could get Harry to drink enough Budweiser in order to allow me to sneak away his half of the pizza without him even noticing.
3. Steve Stone (announcer)
Steve is the third Cubs announcer to make this list. Some Cubs fans may think I have Harry and Steve in the wrong spotz. I don’t think so. Steve Stone was so much more than just the guy who handed Harry his beer : ) Steve was and still is intelligent. He has a great baseball mind. Maybe he should be the new Cubs GM (I’m writing this on the day JimHendry was fired). That’s how much I like him, despite his currently broadcasting for the White Sox.
2. Ryne Sandberg
What would I talk about with Ryne Sandberg if we sat down together for pizza? It would that day he hit two home runs against Cardinals reliever Bruce Sutter. That was the same day Whitey Herzog called him the greatest baseball player he’d ever seen. Yep, that’s what I’d like to talk about with the great Ryno.
And finally, #1 on our list of the top ten Chicago Cubs of all time to share a pizza with is…
1. Ron Santo
Listening to Ron Santo announce a game for the Chicago Cubs is a joy like no other. That’s one of the reasons life isn’t so joyful for this Cubs fan this year. I miss Ron Santo. My son and I went to Chicago’s Gourmet Pizza down the street from our house to celebrate the life of Ron Santo the day we heard of his passing. He was an unabashed Cubs fan. He let the audience know when he was upset with the Cubs, and he let the world know when he was happy with them. He exemplified what is so great about many Cubs announcers over the years, a love for the team. I don’t know anyone who didn’t love Ronnie. I wish he was still here. When I find out where he loved to eat pizza, I’ll share it with you right here.
